DOSING OF HERBS – 3 Ways of Looking at It

Pharmacological Prescribing:
Most of the dosages in the Materia medica are pharmacological doses. The
amount of the botanical preparation suggested is sufficient to act in a
“drug-like” way to induce definite, visible and strong, sustained changes in
the human system. This dosing strategy is the oldest method, and is best
represented by the British herbal tradition. Its potential pitfalls are the
same as those for today’s synthetic drugs: symptoms may be overridden,
masked, or driven deeper into the body or the psyche if treated improperly
or for too long a period of time.

Physiological Prescribing:
The strategy here is to give the minimum dose necessary to produce a
physiological change. Thus, a laxative is given only until there is a change
in bowel action, and not for a long period of time; or a diuretic is given
only to bring the flow of urine up to its normal level, and not beyond. This
strategy of dosing is typified by the naturopathic and physiomedical
traditions. Its strength is that the herbs do not then injure the life
force. Its weakness is that, in some conditions, it simply does not work
effectively to a patient’s satisfaction or relief.

Wise Woman Prescribing:
This strategy selects herbs and other methods which are primarily nourishing
in nature, and uses them in fairly large doses (like a food). It avoids
strong, rare, or toxic plants. Those herbs considered close-at-hand and
growing freely in the area as weeds are preferred. This expression of the
ancient wisdom of folk herbalism has been clarified & explained in recent
years by herbalist Susan Weed.

BLOOD PRESSURE MEASUREMENT
From Nutrition News Focus:
https:///www.NutritionNewsFocus.com

Blood pressure is a controversial subject when it comes to diet, but
measuring it is now an issue also. The British Medical Journal ran a series
of articles on hypertension with the first on simply measuring blood
pressure. https:///www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/322/7294/1110

The article reminds physicians that blood pressure varies during the day,
measurement devices are not all accurate, and it is not as easily measured
in some groups like the elderly and children. Standing, sitting, or lying
down affects your pressure, as does having your arm supported at the level
of the heart (the preferred method).

If you check your own blood pressure at home, you need to check the accuracy
of your readings against one that is established. The blood pressure cuff
must fit your arm properly – one size does not fit all. Each of the
variables listed can affect blood pressure by 10 points, which is enough to
misclassify some as needing treatment for hypertension.

NATURAL SUCCESS STORIES

ULCERS

“I had a whole bunch of Aloe Vera plants (they keep
having babies and I don’t have the heart to throw them
out) and one day God pointed out that they were medicine
He’d provided for us. Last year my Dad had ulcers and I
fed him a fat stem of Aloe Vera every day, scraping out
the gel, and when he went back for tests, the specialist
couldn’t find the ulcers any more.” Ruth M. F.
