Burdock
Burdock
Burdock is a common weed with giant leaves, and seeds (burrs) that cling tenaciously to clothing. Burdock root supports the urinary system in a variety of ways, including helping to remove fluid from the body. This may be the result of its tannin content. It also soothes the digestive tract and promotes appetite.
Used mostly as a blood purifier, burdock increases overall skin health. Burdock has diuretic and diaphoretic properties. One study revealed the presence of 14 different polyacetylene compounds in the fresh root, two of which possessed bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties. Mild antibiotic activity has been shown in root extracts. A study on the roots and leaves shows hypoglycemic activity and an increased carbohydrate tolerance.
Commercial samples of burdock are prone to adulteration with the root of belladonna, or deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna L.) since the roots of these plants closely resemble each other. In light of this potential hazard, it is reasonable to insist on purchasing from a manufacturer that does testing on their raw materials. Nature's Sunshine guarantees 100% purity and their quality control is unsurpassed.
