A NOTE FROM RANDAL
It sure is hot here in Virginia and I imagine it’s where you are too. I
have been out working in the yard and realized how draining the sun can be
on you. I made a point to mention electrolytes in the “Health Related Tip”
portion of the newsletter. As I have worked with various clients I have
found most people don’t consider the need to replenish what is sweated out.
Please mention this to people you know to help them avoid the consequences
of what too much heat does to the electrolyte balance.
Last issue we had a major problem with our email list provider. It seems
they wanted to attach some advertisements to our newsletters that we
couldn’t agree with. It seems not everyone got the bad advertisements.
However, I contacted Yahoo and ask them to not use those kinds of ads. They
informed me that they had no control over what ads are attached to the
newsletters that are sent out. Needless to say, we have parted our ways.
We now are hosting our own lists on a very secure server that no one can
look at but Donna and I. This has taken a great deal of time getting our
lists off Yahoo’s servers. However, we have sent out 3 out of 5 lists
without any problems.
Lastly, I have thoroughly enjoyed this issues funny story. I can just
imagine that scene so vividly. Hope you enjoy it also.
Thanks so much for your continued support and encouragement.
Until next time,
Randal

NUTRIENTS FOR BRAIN HEALTH
Esther Blum, MS, RD, CDN, CNS
“Of all the things I have lost, its my mind that I miss the most.” Can you
relate to this expression? If so, you are not alone. America’s increasing
proportion of older people has resulted in a rising prevalence of dementia
and Alzheimer’s disease. In 1986, healthcare costs were estimated at more
than $50 billion per year for dementia and associated diseases. If you are
concerned about your risk of nerve degeneration, don’t despair. There are
plenty of ways to combat age-associated memory loss, without side effects….
In fact, you can even improve cognitive function with the right supplements
and a proper diet. In addition, if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s,
you can greatly decrease your risk of brain degeneration if you follow the
simple guidelines listed below.
Phosphatidyl Serine
If you can pronounce it, you’re already ahead of the game. Phosphatidyl
Serine (PS) is a phospholipid that is present in every cell membrane in the
body, though it is most prevalent in brain tissue. PS is present in trace
amounts in foods, but to obtain optimal amounts through the diet, you would
have to actually eat animal brains. Supplementation is therefore ideal for
obtaining PS, since commercially available PS is synthetically derived, and
free of all animal products.
What is the role of PS in the body? PS is like the superintendent of the
brain; it is actively involved in the repair and maintenance of each cell’s
structure in the body and the nervous system. Its benefits include memory
improvement, improved learning, alleviation of Alzheimer’s symptoms and
early dementia, greater attention span, mood enhancement, fighting
depression, and combating stress. PS readily crosses the blood-brain barrier
and shuttles glucose to the nerve cells so they are well fed and energized.
It works rapidly, too; studies have shown PS to be effective within 30
minutes of oral administration. I use PS for my patients with age-associated
memory decline, Alzheimer’s, brain injuries, attention deficit disorder, or
for those who simply want to enhance their mental power. The therapeutic
dose of PS is 300 to 500 milligrams per day, and the memory-enhancing
effects of PS can last for up to a month after supplementation is
discontinued. Note that PS should be avoided while using prescription
anti-coagulants such as Coumadin or Heparin. More …

WHAT’S COMING TO DINNER?
Like it or not, genetically altered crops in markets
By Mike Toner Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer
It is an ordinary supermarket with ordinary food — a shopper’s bounty of
cereals, canned foods and condiments. But Andrew Stocklinski — Ph.D. in
pharmaceutical chemistry, former professor at the University of Georgia,
former researcher for a major drug company and a self-made organic farmer —
is no ordinary shopper. More …

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? MUTANT SALMON
A transgenic version of the North Atlantic salmon is the first genetically
engineered animal up for review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for
use as food. The fish looks more or less like its natural cousin, but it
grows seven times faster and is. Scientists achieved those characteristics
by including genes from Chinook salmon and ocean pout fish. Aqua Bounty
Farms, of Waltham, Mass., hopes to farm and market the Frankensalmon, but
environmentalists fear mutant salmon could escape and disrupt the
already-threatened wild population. The fish is likely to join the ranks of
cows with bovine growth hormone and genetically modified corn and soybeans
as watershed species in the battle over bioengineered foods. Maryland and
Oregon already have laws regulating transgenic fish, and Alaska and
California are considering outright bans. Read more details:

FEATURED PRODUCTS
People of all shapes and sizes have it – unsightly fat deposits that cause the
skin around the thighs, hips, buttocks and upper arms to appear much like
cottage cheese.
As people age, tissues in certain parts of the body age too. The level of
microcirculation in these areas affects fatty tissue while blood- and
lymphatic-vessel walls become more permeable with age. These vessels release
fluid into surrounding tissues. This limits the amount of oxygen being
carried to the tissues and reduces the level of drainage. This can cause
puckering and stretch marks as fat cells accumulate.
Nature’s Sunshines Cellu-Smooth with Coleus offers help for millions of
people who seek it.

WHAT SHOULD I TAKE IN THIS HEAT?
When your out in the heat of the day it’s very important you realize that
you need to replace your electrolytes. What are electrolytes? Potassium
and Sodium. Normally, its necessary to replace more Potassium than Sodium.
This can help to prevent exhaustion, poor cognitive function and cramping
muscles.
Athletes have been doing this for years. It’s just as important for us to
replenish our electrolytes after being out in the sun. Eating vegetables
and/or fruits high in Potassium can help. Here is a list of vegetables and
fruits high in Potassium, in order of what percentage of the item contains
Potassium:
Lettuce, Turnips, Dandelion, Cabbage, Parsley, Cucumbers, Cauliflower,
Brussel Sprouts, Irish Potato, Carrots, Celery, Whey, Prunes, Bananas,
Papaya and Lemons
Additonally, there is a recipe for a Potato Peeling Broth that is high in potassium
.
3 Red Potatoes – keep 1/2 of potato with peel. Discard the potatoe center.
1 Carrot -sliced
1 Celery stalk and leaves
Onion or garlic for seasoning
Place water, potato skins, celery and seasoning in a pan. Cook for 1/2 hour
on low heat. Cool and Strain. Serve.
