A NOTE FROM RANDAL
Hello Everyone,
With it being September 11 tomorrow, I wanted to send this out early. I am
planning to not send any ezines out tomorrow in honor of the one year
anniversary of the attack on US soil.
Last issue, I mentioned a resource that points out the dangers of aspertame.
I received a letter asking me to publish a contrary site to the previously
published site. You can go here and look up the word aspertame to find a
contrary opinion. Normally, I agree with snopes.com but not this time. I
have researched many articles on aspertame and I believe it is a product
that requires some warning related to its use. However, I did promise to
print a contrary site and I wanted to fulfill that promise accordingly.
Until next time,
Randal

HERB/VITAMIN NEWS
DHA MAY HELP DIABETICS
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, was
found to improve insulin function in overweight individuals who are
vulnerable to type 2 diabetes. This is based on results of a clinical study
performed by researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Institute,
Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA.
The results of prior epidemiological studies on Greenland Eskimos, a
population that eats mainly whale blubber, had prompted the current
research. These Eskimos are overweight people that scientists believe should
typically have a higher rate of diabetes and heart disease, but they do not.
The researchers that studied them concluded that this phenomenon was likely
due to the Eskimos’ diet, and determined that omega-3 fatty acid provided
the necessary nutritional protection.
In the current study, 12 overweight men and women, aged 40 to 70, consumed
1.8 grams of DHA at breakfast for 12 weeks. While none of the study
participants had diabetes, they all suffered from insulin resistance-a
prediabetic condition in which the body fails to efficiently respond to
insulin.
Blood tests, taken at the outset and at the end of the study, allowed the
researchers to assess changes in each person’s insulin resistance.
At the end of the 12-week period, the investigators noticed a positive
change in insulin sensitivity. They found that while 70 percent of the
subjects showed some improvement in insulin related function, 50 percent had
a clinically significant change.
The overwhelming majority of diabetics have the type 2 form of the disease,
in which the body’s gradual failure to respond to insulin can cause blood
sugar to rise to dangerous levels.

Biomedical Research Institute, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA,

CRANBERRY & BUCHU CONCENTRATE
Cranberry is an all-American fruit. Known by the white man since the
earliest New England colonies, cranberries are said to have been on the menu
of the first Thanksgiving meal. For a long time the cranberry was used as
nothing more than food in the areas where it grew. As time went on, New
England sailors found that if they ate cranberries they didn’t get scurvy.

time for the funeral. Please forgive me and plan on the next issue
containing a new health related tip.
On the same note, I have only received one new ideas to write about. Please
send in your ideas and questions.
